    Vitamin B12

    Panel Code  :  4029

Vitamin B12 is important for metabolism. It helps in the formation of red blood cells and in the maintenance of the central nervous system. A lack of vitamin B12 (B12 deficiency) occurs when the body does not get or is unable to absorb the amount of vitamin that the body needs. Many people over age 50 lose the ability to absorb vitamin B12 from foods. People who follow a strict vegetarian or vegan diet and do not consume eggs or dairy products may need vitamin B12 supplements. Those who have had gastrointestinal surgery, such as weight loss surgery, lose the ability to absorb vitamin B12. People who have digestive disorders, such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease, may not absorb enough vitamin B12. Low levels of B12 can cause: anemia, loss of balance, numbness or tingling in the arms and legs, and/or weakness (NIH Medline Plus. February 2012).

This test can be ordered using the Serum Multi-Option Profile MULTISER1 or MULTISER1 (NY), or CBC and Serum Multi-Option Profile #7988, or CBC and Serum Multi-Option Profile (NY) #7989.

Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential

    Panel Code  :  8015

A complete blood count (CBC) test measures the following:

    • The number of red blood cells (RBCs)
    • The number of white blood cells (WBCs)
    • The total amount of hemoglobin in the blood
    • The fraction of the blood composed of red blood cells (hematocrit)

The CBC test also provides information about the following measurements:

    • Average red blood cell size (MCV)
    • Hemoglobin amount per red blood cell (MCH)
    • The amount of hemoglobin relative to the size of the cell (hemoglobin concentration) per red blood cell (MCHC)

The platelet count is also usually included in the CBC.

The CBC test may be performed under many different conditions and to assess many different symptoms or diseases. The results can reflect problems with fluid volume (such as dehydration) or loss of blood.

The test can reveal problems with RBC production and destruction, or help diagnose infection, allergies, and problems with blood clotting.

MCV, MCH, and MCHC values reflect the size and hemoglobin concentration of individual cells, and are useful in diagnosing different types of anemia. (NIH Medline PLUS).

This test can be ordered using CBC and Serum Multi-Option Profile #7988, or CBC and Serum Multi-Option Profile (NY) #7989.

    Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) Somatomedin C

    Panel Code  :  8016

The primary source of circulating IGF-1 is from the liver, although many tissues synthesize IGF-1. Circulating IGF-1 increases insulin sensitivity.  Reduced levels are associated with insulin resistance, a risk for subsequent development of impaired glucose, or type 2 diabetes. (Tietz Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests 4th ed. edited by Alan H.B. Wu. 2006.)

Chemical interferences and in-vivo effects: High doses of estrogen administration  can decrease IGF-1 levels. Androgenic progestins oppose the estrogen-induced IGFBP-1 increase. (Tietz Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests 4th ed. edited by Alan H.B. Wu. 2006.)

    Ferritin

    Panel Code  :  8032

    Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 3 (IGFBP-3)

    Panel Code  :  8170

Only 1% of circulating IGF-1 is present as free, uncomplexed molecules; the remainder are bound to IGF-specific binding proteins (IGFBPs). IGFBP-3 is the most abundant IGFI binding protein, which forms a ternary complex with IGF-1 and another protein, the acid labile subunit (ALS). The IGFBP-3 is tightly regulated by growth hormone. (Tietz Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests 4th ed. / edited by Alan H.B. Wu. 2006.)
